1. In 1935, Northern Toilet paper was the first to advertise as being "splinter free." (And, yes, this was a very real marketing advantage.) 2. By redeeming UPC codes from Northern Toilet Paper, donations can be made to breast cancer research. 3. Quilted Northern regular rolls come in two packaging sizes: 18 and 24. 4. Quilted Northern double rolls come in five packaging sizes: 4, 6, 12, 18, and 24. 5. Quilted Northern big rolls come in 1 packaging size: 9. 6. Quilted Northern mega rolls come in 2 packaging sizes: 12 and 18. 7. Quilted Northern Ultra double rolls come in 5 packaging sizes: 4, 6, 12, 18, and 24. 8. The company was started by Northern Paper Mills in 1901. It was founded in Green Bay, Wisconsin. 9. The original Northern Toilet Paper roll was comprised of 1000 4/10 sheets. 10. The original Northern toilet paper roll was pierced with a wire loop so that it could be hung by a nail. 11. Originally referred to only as "sanitary tissue," the toilet paper was officially named "Northern Tissue." 12. In 1942, with WWII in progress, Northern reminded consumers that hoarding toilet paper was unpatriotic. 13. In 1948, the company created "Fluffy the Bear" as a mascot. 14. In 1954, Quilted Northern released its colored toilet paper line. 15. The young girls featured on the Northern Toilet Paper packaging are known by the company as "American Beauties." 16. Northern produced its first two ply toilet paper in 1962, but quickly shut down production due to lack of demand. 2 ply made its triumphant return in 1975 and has been on shelves ever since. 17. In 1993, "Northern Tissue" was renamed "Quilted Northern." 18. In 1997, Northern's new mascots, "The Quilters" are introduced. 19. The plastic packaging on the outside of Quilted Northern is made from #4 plastic, which is recyclable in some areas. 20. Quilted Northern contains no dyes, scents, or perfumes. 21. Northern discontinued their colored line. White is currently the only available color. 22. Quilted Northern is embossed on one side. The plain side is meant to rub softly against your skin, while the embossing on the other side adds absorbancy. 23. The lines found on either side of Quilted Northern tissue are known as "knurling wheel marks." These tracks hold the plies together. 24. Pictures of the American Beauties can be obtained by writing to The Old School, 315 Elizabeth Street, P.O. Box 99, Mishicot, WI 54228. All knowledge is power. Read enough factoids and you can repair an old Power Pad. |
